Aerial view of Nagasaki (Japan)
The city of Nagasaki lies on the Japanese island of Kyushu, in the eastern part of the East China Sea. The city was originally called Hirado. During its history dating back to the medieval times – thanks to its location – Nagasaki primarily served the function of an international port. On August 9, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which changed the face of the city forever. Today Nagasaki is a dynamic center of metallurgical and shipbuilding industry, trade and fishing have also remained important sectors of city’s economy.
