The town of Agios Nikolaos lies on the north-eastern shore of Crete, on Mirabello bay. This Greek fishing town owes its name to a nearby 10th-century church, the Orthodox temple of St. Nicholas. In the town center there is freshwater Lake Voulismeni, which has been connected with the port by a special canal since 1870. Currently, Agios Nikolaos is primarily a holiday resort, full of cafes and souvenir shops. In the port you can see fishing boats and go for a walk along the beautifully illuminated promenade.
