Panorama of Alfama (Portugal)
The capital of Portugal – Lisbon, is a big city on the Atlantic Ocean. Alfama is one of its oldest districts. It is the historic center of the city beautifully situated on the river Tagus. The district’s buildings survived the earthquake in 1755, when almost entire Lisbon was ruined. It is assumed that the Alfama is the birthplace of fado, i.e. traditional Portuguese folk songs. This medieval district lies on a hill that is full of narrow and winding streets. Buildings are crowned by the characteristic red roofs. The Alfama is surrounded by historic buildings - the São Jorge Castle, Sé Cathedral and the church of St Anthony.
