Alfama District in Lisbon (Portugal)
Republic of Portugal is located in the west of Southern Europe. Lisbon, situated on the Tagus river, is the capital of Portugal. Alfama, the oldest district of the city, is also situated on the river and it is considered to be the historic center of Lisbon. It is the place where the city’s growth was the most rapid during the times when the Moors reigned. With the passing of time Alfama’s significance diminished as the district of Baixa was developing and Alfama was inhabited mostly by fishermen. The district was not as badly destroyed during the 1755 earthquake as other parts of the city, and due to that many buildings have survived until the present day. Alfama district is considered to be the birthplace of the Portuguese Fado music.
