Baiterek, the symbol of Astana (Kazakhstan)

Baiterek is a 105-meter high lookout tower located in the Kazakh city of Astana. The construction of the facility designed by Norman Foster was completed in 2002. The tower with its original shape refers to the legend of the bird named Samruk that laid its egg between the branches of poplar – the tree of life supporting the sky. The slender monument is crowned with a golden 22 m diameter sphere, in which there is an observation deck. Baiterek is a popular tourist attraction and the most important symbol of Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan since 1997.
