Bergen, known as "the gateway to the fjords", is a Norwegian city situated where the Norwegian and North Seas meet. Its original name is Bjorgvin - this settlement was founded by Olaf III in the second half of the 11th century. Thanks to the presence of the port, Bergen witnessed the rapid development of trade in the Middle Ages. The city has retained its Hanseatic character, there are historic churches, museums supporting the merchant traditions of Bergen. There is also the Fish Market. Bryggen district, with a number of colorful commercial buildings, is the main attraction of the city. The city is surrounded by seven mountain peaks.
