Berlin panorama at sunset (Germany)
Berlin was formed from the merger of two towns situated on the opposite banks of the river Spree – the town of Cölln, lying on the island, and Berlin that was located on the right bank of the river. As early as in the thirteenth century a common town hall for the two centers was built, and the city began to grow quite quickly. Nevertheless, it was during the reign of Frederick I when Berlin became the capital of the country in 1701. At that time Berlin also "absorbed" the adjacent towns and it began to grow into the metropolis we know today. Due to the destruction, which the city suffered during World War II and the fact that for the next half-century it was divided by the Berlin Wall, the city is not architecturally consistent. However, many believe it is the advantage of this multicultural, diverse city.
