Lighthouse in Cape Algarve (Portugal)
Portuguese province of Algarve owes its name to Arabic word, which means “the land located in the west” – al-garb. It occupies the southern coast of Portugal from Cape Saint Vincent to the Spanish border. It is a very popular tourist region, famous for beautiful beaches, sunny weather, unforgettable landscapes and hospitality of people who live there. The cape itself is obviously a tourist attraction too – a picturesque rocky cliff with a lighthouse towering on top of it was considered to be the end of the world in the Middle Ages. Near the cape there are ruins of medieval fortresses Sagres and Beliche, which were used for defensive purposes against pirates.
