Fortress in Carcassonne (France)

Carcassonne is a town in Languedoc (between the Massif Central and the Pyrenees) in France. The town consists of two parts: new and old. In the new part of Carcassonne industry and grapevine grooving dominate. In the old part, which is called Cité, tourism is prevalent. The most important part of the old part of the town are the fortifications that include two bands of walls, gates, barbicans and a stronghold. The stronghold consists of two rings of defensive ramparts, 53 towers and a square castle. The interior part of the fortress comes from 6th century (it was built by the Visigoths), exterior part comes from the middle of 13th century. The Carcassonne fortress is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.
