The tradition of German Christmas markets dates back to the 14th century. Weihnachtsmarkt is usually held outdoors, at the main market of the city, mostly in the neighborhood of the Old Town. Apart from the dozens of stalls offering local foods, hot and cold drinks, sweet snacks, Christmas ornaments and small gifts, those visiting the fair can also admire the beautifully decorated Christmas tree, illuminated carousels for children, as well as performances by local musicians, actors and dancers. Weihnachtsmarkt in Frankfurt am Main is one of the oldest and most frequently visited by tourists. It takes place at the Römerberg city hall square, where the city bustles with life against the background of historic buildings, surrounded by colorful stalls.
