El Caletón natural pools in Garachico (Spain)

Natural pools filled with sweet water are located along the north-west coast of the Spanish island of Tenerife in the town of Garachico. These amazing formations were created in result of the eruption of the Trevejo volcano in 1706. The lave flowing from the volcano destroyed the town, putting an end to its splendor. However, after reaching the Atlantic Ocean the hot lava quickly cooled down and hardened, creating natural water bodies separated from the open sea. Despite the fact that the disaster razed Garachico to the ground, nobody was killed and the pools that were created at that time have become the favorite bathing place of the locals, but also a popular tourist attraction. Thanks to these characteristic natural formations the town makes huge profits from tourism.
