Portoferraio is the biggest town and at the same time the capital of the island of Elba in the Tuscan Archipelago. Due to the lay of the land, majority of the houses were built along the routes situated on the hills, creating a picturesque, typically Mediterranean landscape. The location between the continental part of Italy and its largest islands made Portoferraio one of the most important Mediterranean ports. What is more, the town is known for the fact of sending Napoleon into exile in 1814. The palace in which he resided became the largest tourist attraction of the island and his thirteen chambers have remained unchanged since the moment when the emperor left them.
