Cuzco is located in the south of Peru and it is also the capital of the region of the same name. The city is situated at an altitude of 3326 meters above sea level and was founded in the twelfth century by the Inca ruler. The name Cuzco probably means "the navel of the world". Plaza de Armas, i.e. one of the most presentable squares, is located in the center of the city. There are the most important buildings - the old Inca temples that were partly rebuilt as monasteries and churches. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is the most recognizable building located on the main square of Cuzco, it was built at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
