25th of April Bridge on the Tagus river connects Lisbon, the capital of the country, with the town of Almada. The 2277-meter structure was put into service in 1966. The two-level, red Ponte 25 de Abril is reminiscent of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The construction of the bridge over the Tagus River was commissioned to a team of constructors from the American Bridge Company. It ranks high on the list of the longest bridges in the world. Even large ships can pass under it without any problem, as the upper platform is about 70 meters above the surface of water. Originally, the suspension structure was named after dictator António de Oliveira Salazar. The current name of the bridge commemorates the day of the overthrow of his rule in the so-called Carnation Revolution of 1974.
