Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, the seat of the government, an important financial and cultural center and the largest city in the country. The location of Stockholm is particularly noteworthy – it is situated on fourteen islands, and – partially – on the mainland. The individual parts are spanned by dozens of bridges. The growth of the city began in its historic district called Gamla Stan, it was founded in the thirteenth century by Birger Magnusson – a Swedish magnate. The Old Town is home to the Lutheran church of St. Nicholas, the Royal Palace, the Parliament building and the building of the Royal Mail.
