Golf course in Stowe (USA)
Golf is a sport of long, but also mysterious history. Scotland is commonly considered to be the home of that sport – according to sources it originated there in the 15th century. At the beginning it was the sport played in Scotland and England and thanks to these countries it became popular all over the world. However, there are some indications that provide evidence that golf originated in the Netherlands. As early as at the end of the 13th century the sport similar to golf was described in the Netherlands. Players were supposed to aim at the board, instead of a hole. The name “golf” itself comes from the Dutch word “kolf” which means a stick or walking stick. The origins of the game have not been explained so far and the two theories – the British and the Dutch – have ardent supporters.
