Bornholm is an island belonging to Denmark, located in the Baltic Sea. In its southern part there is a complex of medieval fortifications - they were being built in this place since the thirteenth century, when in 1255 the Archbishop of Lund commissioned the building of the castle. The fortress was located on a hill and surrounded by a defensive wall. For years the fortress was the residence of the rulers of the island, for some time the castle was used as a prison and finally it started to fall into ruin. However, renovations have been done there for some time and the castle is made available to the public.
