Traditional white house in the village of Bozhentsi (Bulgaria)
Bozhentsi is a village located in Grabovo municipality in central Bulgaria. The village is an architectural reserve which was enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. The village was established in the 16th century after the incursion of Ottoman Turks in Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Many residents of the capital then fled to settle in remote and secure parts of the mountains, where they established temporary settlements, which then became permanent ones. According to the legend, among the people who fled was the young female noble Bozhana, who chose to hide in the area where the village today is, and gave it its name. During the Ottoman reign the residents of the village were quite rich and for that reason many of the houses have two floors and characteristic verandas as well as the stone-plate roofs.
