Xewkija is the oldest settlement located on the Maltese island of Gozo. Its rapid development was determined by a convenient location, guaranteeing safety and the possibility of defense, as well as fertile soils. The town inhabited by several thousand people was the seat of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. There are historic sandstone buildings with characteristic terraces. The town is dominated by a gigantic dome of Rotunda, i.e. the church of St. John the Baptist, from which there is a view of the whole area.
