Island of Hvar (Croatia)
Hvar is a Croatian island of an elongated shape and mountainous topography. It is called the “lavender island” due to lush fragrant purple flowers that grow there. The island is also known for the nets drying in the wind, as many residents make their living from fishing. The town of Hvar is the largest town on the island, in which the 17th-century theater and walls from the 7th century are located. Stari Grad, i.e. the Old Town, is the biggest attraction of the town as it was enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 2009. Today tourists may admire fragments of the ancient baths and mosaics. The Old Town is full of historic monuments, including a few churches, Dominican monastery and charming Baroque houses situated on the Škor square.
