Gothic architecture originated in the first half of the twelfth century in France and quickly gained popularity in Europe, becoming a dominating style. Among the most characteristic features of the Gothic style there are cross-ribbed vaults, often supported on slender columns and shafts. Today the late medieval architectural elements are still used in the design of churches and elegant secular buildings. Soaring structures of buildings, high ceilings and proper illumination refer to the structural solutions applied to old, Gothic buildings.
