Decorated façades in Lille (France)
Lille is a city located in the north-east of France. It was granted the city rights in the 12th century, however, its importance increased significantly in the 17th century when the city was fortified, becoming an impregnable fortress. Despite the fact that it was not conquered for over 200 years, it was heavily damaged during the two World Wars. Fortunately, some historic buildings were preserved, others were precisely reconstructed and thanks to that tourists can still enjoy the beautiful old town with houses that have ornate facades and characteristic square windows.
