Lindau is a town in Bavaria, in the south-western tip of Germany. The town is located on the shore of Lake Constance and its oldest part is situated on a small island. This distinctive location has influenced the identity of the region and its inhabitants for centuries. Since the ancient times, Lindau has been a fishing village, which thanks to the proximity of the major transalpine routes has become an important trading town. Merchants from Lindau traded with Italy and other towns surrounding Lake Constance, giving the town a high position. Today the port on the island of Lindau is an important center of inland waterway, what is more, tourist industry is rapidly developing here.
