Lombard Street is one of the streets running through residential Russian Hill in San Francisco and is known as the most crooked street in the world. Russian Hill is situated on one of the many hills that are located within the city. It is so steep that it is viewed from the tops of the neighboring hills, it looks as if the buildings were place one on top of the other. Large angle of inclination of its slopes made driving a car in the 1920s impossible. For that reason the local residents postulated that Lombard Street that runs along the steepest slope was built in the form of eight sharp turns. Today, in accordance with the regulations, the street is drivable only in one direction – downhill.
