Main square in the town of Trinidad (Cuba)
Trinidad de Cuba is a small town located in the central part of Cuba, near the south coast. Contrary to the majority of Cuban cities, Trinidad was built a little bit further inland in order to protect it from pirate raids. The town enjoys a reputation of "the jewel of Cuba" and its colonial old quarter of the 18th century is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is forbidden to build high-rise buildings in the town and considerable sums of money are spent for the renovation of old building, which makes it possible to preserve the historic character of Trinidad. Cobbled streets, colorful squares, churches and colonial mansions attract numerous tourists.
