Murten is a small Swiss town by Lake Morat in the canton of Fribourg. This medieval town is surrounded by ancient walls and has a well-maintained, colorful old town. Its market is surrounded by restored merchant houses with characteristic arcades. The town’s gate with the Berntor clock tower is the landmark of Murten. The charming old town is often photographed, put on postcards and even reproduced in miniatures, which may be an additional attraction for tourists and enthusiasts of the history of Murten. On 22 June 1476 the town witnessed an armed clash, in which the Swiss army defeated the Burgundians.
