Montreal is the second largest city of Canada and the largest sea port on the eastern part of the country, it is located at the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The city is situated on the island that was discovered by the French explorer Jacques Cartier in the 16th century. The hill towering over the eyot was named in honor of the French monarch and it is called Mont Royal, giving the name to the city that was established over a century later. Originally Montreal functioned as a missionary settlement, but then it grew richer as it was the most important fur trade center in the region. The most rapid growth of the city was observed in the 20th century, mostly in the 1960s and 1970s, when a wide range of large investments were realized due to the organization of the World’s Fair and Summer Olympic Games.
