Mount Everest

Mount Everest, which is also called the Jomolungma and the Roof of the World, is the world's highest summit, and is 8850 m high. The name that was given in the middle of 19th century comes from the surname of sir George Everest, the British geodesist and cartographer (Jomolungma was earlier called the Peak XV). Mount Everest is located in the Central Himalayas (within the limits of the Himalayas Crown), on the border of Nepal and Tibet. The mountain is created by the massif that is surrounded from three sides by large glaciers. The summit was reached for the first time on 29th May 1953 (it was achieved by the New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a Nepali sherpa). The locals believe that the Jomolungma is the residence of gods.
