Old Town of Baia Mare (Romania)
Baia Mare is a Romanian city situated at the foot of the Eastern Carpathians. Its name can be translated as the Great Mine. Its inhabitants have lived from mining for centuries. Baia Mare is the capital of Maramures County and is located near the border with Hungary. Visitors to the city can admire the fifteenth-century Stephen’s Tower, the remains of ancient fortifications, urban towers and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity from the eighteenth century. The local cemetery with characteristic tombstones is also a tourist attraction. Baia Mare has a well-maintained, cozy old town, which is unfortunately surrounded by not very nice tower-block housing estates.
