Ottawa is the capital of Canada, located on the Ottawa River in the province of Ontario. Lowertown, known also as Basse-ville, is the oldest part of the city. There are most important historic monuments and tourist attractions in the neighborhood of the Rideau Canal that divides Ottawa into Uptown and Downtown. During part of the winter season the frozen waters of the canal form a long skating rink. While visiting the capital of Canada it is worth seeing the 19th century Parliament Hill, Supreme Court of Canada, Canadian Museum of Civilization or National Gallery of Canada. Impressive Notre-Dame basilica also deserves some attention. There are three universities and quite many other public and private academies.
