Parthenon on the Acropolis (Greece)
The Parthenon is one of the most important monuments of the Acropolis of Athens located on a limestone hill. The temple dedicated to the goddess Athena was built in the 5th century BC. The building was surrounded by a colonnade, and the most important place in its interior was occupied by the statue of Athena made by Phidias of gold and ivory. The Parthenon has an extremely rich history, it served, among others, as a Christian church and mosque. At the beginning of the 19th century, the sculptures and other architectural elements found in the temple were dismantled and taken to England by Lord Elgin.
