Urk is a Dutch town in the province of Flevoland. Originally Urk was an island, but in 1939 it was joined with the mainland with a dike. Due to its convenient location in the bay of the North Sea, the town’s inhabitants have mostly made their living out of fishing and fish trade, however, today the town derives most of its income from tourism. In Urk there are historical merchants' houses, the nineteenth-century lighthouse, marina and charming seaside promenade. Fishing boats provide residents and tourists with a daily fresh portion of fish.
