Halloween is a holiday with a very long history. As early as in pre-Christian times it was celebrated all over northern Europe, but - contrary to how it is interpreted today - not as a celebration of the dead but a time of breakthrough between summer and winter. On the one hand, it was time of joy due to abundant harvests, and on the other hand, people were saddened by the coming cold weather. It was believed that during this extraordinary time the boundary between the worlds of people and spirits was blurred. According to some theories, this belief is a source of wearing bizarre clothes for Halloween - they were supposed to scare away bad powers and ensure safety.
