The church of St Peter has been considered the most important building in Riga, the Latvian capital, from the time of its erection until the present day. The first written record of the construction of the church dates back to the early 13th century, however, it is not known exactly when the construction of the edifice began. For centuries, the temple was re-edified and restored after fires and war destructions, but has always represented the heart of Old Riga. It was a parish of the townspeople, who found shelter within its walls in case of distress. Ringing of church bells marked the daily rhythm of city life and informed about special events. In the 72-meter bell tower there is now an observation deck from which you can admire the magnificent panorama of the city.
