Wakatipu is a post-glacial lake located on the largest island of New Zealand in the Southern Alps. The lake is over 80 kilometers long and lies 310 meters above sea level. Snow-capped peaks reflect in its surface. In the area of Wakatipu, the scenes of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring directed by Peter Jackson were shot. The popular Queenstown ski resort lies on the lake, whereas tourists may cross the lake on the board of the vintage TSS Earnslaw steamer.
