Statue of Tsar Alexander II on the Senate Square (Finland)

The Senate Square is one of the most elegant places in Helsinki. The majestic cathedral dominates the northern part of the square. The Lutheran church with typical domes was designed by Carl Ludwig Engel. Opposite this white, neoclassical church there is a statue of the Russian tsar Alexander II. It was created in 1894 in accordance with the design by Walter Runeberg, it is a reminder of the times when Finland was a part of the Russian Empire. The figure of the tsar is surrounded by four smaller forms symbolizing work, light, peace and law.
