Panorama of Terre-de-Haut island (Guadeloupe)
Terre-de-Haut is one of two inhabited islands of the Les Saintes archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, which consists of nine islands in total. This area belongs to Guadeloupe, an overseas department of France. These islands, however, have not always belonged to the French. After the discovery by Columbus in the late fifteenth century they were seized by the French pirates, then by West India Company, then until 1946 repeatedly passed from the French hands to the English ones when their territorial affiliation was stabilized. Interestingly, the policy of the French Government policy allowed to suppress almost completely the separatists movements prevailing on the islands until the1980. Today only 4% of the Guadeloupe population advocates for independence.
