Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is a bascule bridge over the River Thames, iconic symbol of London. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name. Construction of the bridge started in 1886 and took eight years. The original raising mechanism was powered by pressurised water stored in six hydraulic accumulators. Water was pumped into the accumulators by two stationary steam engines.
