Panorama of Bologna with Two Towers (Italy)
Bologna is an old Italian city known mostly for the oldest university in Europe, however, the well-known university is not the only symbol of the city. The Two Towers, reaching the height of almost 100 meters, are equally popular. In the past there were more of such towers, in the Middle Ages they were used as lookouts against the Saracens and there were approximately 200 such towers in Bologna. Today the two towers standing next to each other are best known – the lower one called the Garisenda was not finished due to yielding of the ground which left it slanting and dangerous. The second 100-meter tower called the Asinelli was built then and tourists may climb to its top in order to admire the city’s panorama.
