The name Tōkyō (Japanese 東京) means "Eastern Capital" [3]. Until 1868 the name of the city was Edo [3]. <br />

Tokyo is not formally a city but a metropolitan prefecture since July 1, 1943. It was devastated by the 1923 earthquake and also by the US bombing in May 1945 (during WWII). It was also the organizer of the 1964 Summer Olympics and will be back in 2020.
