Historical Bell

Historical Bell used by the cura Hidalgo on the Mexico´s Independence Event (16 sep 1810).

This is where the Mexican independence movement began in earnest. At 5 a.m. on September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo, the parish priest, rang the bells to summon people to church earlier than usual and issued the Grito de Dolores , whose precise words have been lost to history but which boiled down to ''Long Live Our Lady of Guadalupe ! Death to bad government and the gachupines !'' (''Gachupines'' was the derisive name for Mexico's Spanish overlords, against whom a powder keg of resentment finally exploded in this small town). Today Father Hidalgo is Mexico's most revered hero. Dolores was renamed in his honor in 1824 and visiting Dolores Hidalgo has acquired pilgrimage status for Mexicans. The Museo Casa de Hidalgo is the house where Hidalgo lived and where he, Ignacio Allende and Juan de Aldama decided in the early hours of September 16, 1810, to launch the uprising. It is something of a national shrine to Mexicans. One large room is devoted to a big collection of memorials, wreaths and homages to Hidalgo.
