The monumental fortress towering over Alfama, the historic district of Lisbon, was erected by the Moors in the early 12th century. After over two hundred years, on the initiative of King John I the Good, Saint George became the patron of the castle. The ruins of Castelo de Sao Jorge are visited daily by thousands of tourists who want to see the bird’s eye view of the capital of Portugal. Visiting the fortifications, you can admire the panorama of Lisbon with its characteristic roofs covered with orange tiles, as well as old buildings and skyscrapers slightly away from the historical city center.
