Young jaguar with its mother

Beautiful and proud jaguar can be admired by many, however, it is a must to remember that it is a dangerous predator. It belongs to the family of the cats and is the third largest representative of that family – slightly smaller than tigers and lions. Jaguars are solitary animals, inhabiting mostly forested and humid areas. Contrary to popular opinion concerning cats, jaguars love water and are great swimmers. They can be distinguished from other cats as they have the strongest bite of all cats – jaguar’s jaws are capable of biting through carapaces of large reptiles, e.g. alligators. This feature also determines the way jaguars hunt. Majority of cats employ the deep throat-bite and suffocation technique but jaguars attack by piercing directly through the temporal bones between the ears of prey and crush their skull.
