New Orleans is located in the delta of the Mississippi river. Since its foundation in 1718 the city has been struggling with the element of water. It is all due to the fact that a large part of New Orleans is located below the sea level. Despite the system of dams and barrages, the city could not have protected itself against the Hurricane Katrina, which struck in 2005. This natural disaster caused flooding of 80% of the city’s area. Even today some of the districts are not available for the former dwellers.
