Riga is a beautiful historic city situated on the river Daugava. The capital of Latvia is located on the European Route of Brick Gothic and its Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Riga is an important communication, industrial, commercial and scientific center, but the visitors are mainly attracted by the Gothic buildings of the Old Town, Art Nouveau tenement houses and other architectural pearls. It is also important to mention tourist attractions of historic, cultural and religious value: two cathedrals, the council and churches. The 18th-century Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is one of the most famous temples. In the bright interior of the church there are as many as five altars. Masses are held here in Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian and Polish.
