The Pierhead Lighthouse was built in 1872 Near the place where the Milwaukee River flows into Lake Michigan. It is one of the typical "red towers" illuminating the way of sailors on Lake Michigan, as well as the “twin sister” of the Kenosha Lighthouse, located north of the Pierhead. The Lighthouse had its own guard until 1926, then - along with other surrounding lighthouses – it was operated by the operator, stationed in the North Point Lighthouse. Today it is completely automated.
