The library named after Nicholas Murray Butler, widely known as Butler Library, is the largest library of Columbia University in New York with more than 11 million volumes and the building itself is one of the largest university edifices. The library was founded by a graduate of Columbia University, Edward Harkness, and the edifice was built in 1934 by his favorite architect, James Gamble Rogers. Neoclassical facade of the library features an arcade of columns in the Ionic order, above which are inscribed the names of great writers, philosophers, and thinkers. Nobel Prize-winning novelist Orhan Pamuk's worked on his books within the walls of the library.
