Gdańsk Shipyard is one of the biggest industrial plants in Poland, which builds and renovates ships. It was founded in 1945 on sites of the former German shipyards. More than 1,000 seagoing vessels were built there. The shipyard was also the scene of events of major importance for the history of Polish. In December 1970 there was the strike of workers which was suppressed by the military. After the labor strikes that took place in 1980 in the shipyard the so-called August agreement was signed which led to the creation of "Solidarity". High shipyard cranes are one of the characteristic features of the landscape of Gdańsk.
