Munich is the capital of Bavaria in southern Germany, located on the River Isar. The representative Marienplatz, i.e. Mary’s Square, is the central point of the city and the place where the most important monuments of Munich are located. The name of the square comes from the early 19th century and refers to Virgin Mary, who protected the inhabitants against the cholera epidemic. The Munich's Marienplatz is dominated by the neo-Gothic New City Hall. There is also the Old City Hall at the Marienplatz, but it is was converted into a museum of toys, as well as the Marian column and the so-called fish fountain.
