Lappeenranta lies on Lake Saimaa, in the south-eastern part of Finland. The city is considered one of the most beautiful ones in the country – its streets are clean and well maintained. It develops thanks to industrial plants, University of Technology and tourism. The fragments of the 18th-century fortifications and the oldest Orthodox church in Finland are the main historic monuments of Lappeenranta. In the summer, cruises on the lake and Saimian Canal are a popular tourist attraction. The canal connects Lappeenranta with the Russian cities of Vyborg and St. Petersburg. Lappeenranta has the largest inland port in Finland.
